Last week was the first week of classes! And I know it sounds hard to believe, but I was actually looking forward to finally starting to work again…after not having class from early December until March, I felt my brain slowly starting to lose weight of knowledge. I was signed up for four classes, and on Monday I had a tutorial (which is like a discussion class back home) –they call these ‘tuts’–at 9am for Love Death and Poetry, a 12pm lecture for Sociology of Media and Pop Culture, and finally another tutorial at 2pm for Supernatural literature.
I woke up early and was all ready for class, and of course my teacher never showed for my 9am tut. I was PISSED. You all know how much I love my sleep. So I decided to wait until 9:30 to make sure the teacher wasn’t running late–she wasn’t–so I went back to my dorm to make some breakfast. I know, I still have a heart attack knowing that I can cook some basic meals, too.
Then, I went with my friend Rebekah to our Sociology class. Sitting there I knew immediately I had already sort of gone over a lot of the same material back home, so I started to think about dropping the class. It was just a little boring for me and a lot of repetition. I wanted to go to the tut for it though, just to see if it got any better.
Later, I went to my tut for Supernatural literature and immediately fell in love with my teacher, her name is LJ and she is one of the biggest geeks I have ever met. She had us all introduce ourselves: say our name, what we were looking forward to, and our ‘nerd-out.’ My classmates’ answers ranged from looking forward to the hot weather ending, to babies being born in their families, and to the new Game of Thrones season coming out. A couple girls talked about how they were looking forward to visiting America in the next year! I was just like REPPPPPP. ‘Murica. When it was my turn, I said I was excited to travel around Australia, because it was my first time here, and everyone was so excited to have an exchange student in their class. I was a little nervous to be the only American in the class, but warmly welcomed by everyone’s smiling faces.
That night we stayed in and relaxed after the first day of classes.
The next day I had my first Greek Tragedy lecture and was happy to know someone in the class–a new Australian friend Luke who I met on the beach orientation! After we figured out our tutorial situation, we signed up to make the first presentation of the trimester the next week on Agamemnon–to get it over with. I went to my sociology tut with Rebekah, and decided to drop the class….you can all probably figure out how it was, then. That night my friends and I went out to The Hawthorn Hotel, because they have their main events on Tuesdays! Yes, I know, inappropriate, it’s called Tightarse Tuesdays, c’mon guys grow up.
Wednesday I had Love Death and Poetry, and unfortunately it was really boring because all the teacher talked about, was what we would do for the semester. That night my friends and I went to a Rubix Cube Party! You had to wear all six colors of a rubix cube, and switch clothes at the club. By the end of the night you were supposed to have only one color on.

AFTER!!
I decided to go for all orange, it was a lot of fun!!
Thursday I had my Supernatural literature lecture, and I love my actual professor! He is very passionate and has a great speaking voice – not one that drones on and on. That night we went to The Palace, our usual Thursday spot.
Kristen, Brianne, Me, Kirsten!
(Kirsten and Kristen are actually the first two girls I met at the airport in Australia!)
Friday I had no classes, so I decided to hang out and relax with everyone after a long week. That night we stayed in and hung out in my unit, getting to know each other better and bond.
Saturday we relaxed some more and were invited to a house party at my friend Frederick’s house, who we met at the exchange student beach orientation! It was a really nice laid back party – not the type of ‘house party’ you would expect back in the states. No red solo cups, kegs, or slutty girls wandering around! Refreshing.
Sunday rolled around and it was St. Patty’s day. We woke up and my friend Josh and I decided to go buy some last minute green! I bought a shirt and of course a pair of boxer briefs. I wore my ninja turtle hat and backpack and put green on my face. It seemed like the entire dorm life started partying together around 11am and we had a BBQ at the other dorm area, MB.
Jess and I – matching boxer twins!!!
Then, everyone went to the Hawthorn hotel for drinks, and we stayed for a couple hours hanging out, eating, drinking, and taking over this little club/bar as crazy green aliens! They had green dye they put into the beer, so after a while everyone had green tongues and teeth.

After the Hawthorn, we all migrated to Geebung, another bar right around the corner and stayed there for music and more drinks. There were a lot of nice cute tables where everyone was sitting and hanging out, and everyone was sharing green apparel! I also got to spend a lot of time with some of my housemates – who I absolutely love – (SHOUTOUT G2-UNIT)
Housemates Jesse and Josh
RA Ashleigh
Housemate Geoff
Housemate Tara
There are more housemates that I have and I need to get pictures with ALL OF THEM!!
People were running around with green dye and by the end of it I had green all over my arms, it looked like I was wearing a long sleeved green shirt.
Luke, Me, Rebekah — yep, that is my green skin, not a long sleeved shirt.
The music was great, there was a live band, great dance floor, and the place was filled with tons of green dancing people. We had sort of an early night (thankfully, starting at 11am was a little excessive) and went home around 1030pm.
Even after a long day of drinking Sunday, Monday I had class and still made it to my 9am tut, PROUD MOM? I actually ended up switching it to noon anyway after I dropped my sociology class. After classes we hung out that night and watched The Dark Knight. Tuesday I had my Greek Tragedy presentation with Luke and we NAILED IT! Props to us for being the first pair to present! Whoopwhoop. The teacher praised us. No big deal. Later that night some of us watched Eurotrip and relaxed some more and planned a BEACH TRIP for today!
I’m sorry for those back in MA because I heard about the snow–mom I know you hate the snow–and I’m sorry for bragging about going to the beach after class buttttt we went to the beaaaach ha haaa. Well just James, Jake, and I. But it was still awesome. James is another one of my housemates as well! The three of us had a blast and even made a kick-ass sandcastle.
Me, James, and Jake
When we came home we hung out and we just finished watching Borat.
I also forgot to mention, Sarah and I booked a trip to Cairns, the great barrier reef and Sydney during our Easter break! We are going to go snorkeling, I can’t wait! It is going to be beautiful and amazing.
This is the longest post in the history of posts. Either way, missing everyone back home, wishing you were all here and hope everyone is safe in the snow! And for my ZOOMASS family, hope you’re all having an awesome spring break! Someone should have planned to visit me – I’ll try not to be offended, psh whatever guys Cancun is cool too, I guess. Much love.
you are having way too much fun! I am so glad to “hear” all about it.
